On March 18, 2025, a case of chikungunya virus infection was reported in a German traveler after returning from Sri Lanka. Previously, local authorities had warned of an increase in cases in the country. The patient experienced high fever and persistent joint pain, characteristic symptoms of this mosquito-borne viral disease. Recommendations for Travelers

Before the trip

  • Consult a travel medicine specialist at least 4-6 weeks before departure.
  • Ensure you are up to date with recommended vaccinations.
  • Purchase travel health insurance that covers medical assistance abroad.

During the trip

  • Prevent mosquito bites by using repellents containing DEET (≥20%), picaridin, or IR3535.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and insecticide-treated bed nets.
  • Sleep in air-conditioned rooms or those protected with mosquito nets.
  • Avoid areas with stagnant water and limit outdoor activities at dawn and dusk.

Symptoms to watch for

  • High fever, severe joint pain, extreme fatigue, or skin rash.
  • If you experience symptoms, seek medical attention and avoid using NSAIDs until dengue is ruled out.

After the trip

  • If you develop symptoms within the first two weeks after returning, consult a doctor and report your travel history.
  • Use insect repellent for three weeks after returning if you had symptoms to prevent transmission to others.
