Costa Rica has reported 21 confirmed cases of chikungunya in 2026.
The disease is transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Symptoms include high fever, headache, fatigue, rash, nausea and joint pain.
Alajuela is the province with the highest number of cases (six), followed by San Ramón, Grecia, Nicoya and Esparza (two each). Carrillo, San José, Alajuelita, Tibás, Matina, Guácimo and Heredia have reported one case each.
