Chikungunya fever alert in Argentina

There were 13,230 suspected cases of chikungunya fever reported in Argentina, of which 3,618 were confirmed. Imported cases came from Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Cuba. The first cases with no travel history were identified in Salta, confirming local transmission. The highest disease burden is concentrated in the Northwest region (3,492 cases), especially in Salta, Tucumán, and Jujuy. Outbreaks were reported in Catamarca, Santiago del Estero, and Buenos Aires, with detections in the City of Buenos Aires and Córdoba.

The median age is 31 years, with the 45-65 age group being the most affected. Women represent 54% of the cases. Nine severe cases were reported, two of which resulted in death. Both fatal cases occurred in Salta.
