Chikungunya Outbreak in Réunion Island

There has been a significant increase in Chikungunya cases in Réunion Island (France), with 1,766 new cases reported last week—18% more than the previous week. In total, 5,041 cases have been recorded in 2025. Since August 2024, 72% of the cases have been concentrated in the southern municipalities.

What is Chikungunya?
Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes. It causes symptoms such as high fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headaches, nausea, fatigue, and skin rashes. Although rarely fatal, joint pain can be debilitating and may last for weeks or months.

Precautions for Travelers to Réunion Island
If you plan to travel to Réunion Island, it is recommended to take the following precautions to minimize the risk of contracting Chikungunya:

  • Use insect repellents: Apply repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil on exposed skin.
  • Wear protective clothing: Opt for long-sleeved shirts and long pants, preferably in light colors, to reduce skin exposure.
  • Choose safe accommodations: Stay in places with air conditioning, mosquito nets, or screened windows and doors to prevent mosquito entry.
  • Avoid high-incidence areas: Consider limiting visits to the southern municipalities, where most recent cases have been reported.
