French Guiana has recorded 1,157 confirmed cases of chikungunya since the end of January, with a peak of 105 weekly cases during weeks 18-20.
There have been 210 hospitalizations, of which 177 were for common illness, 21 for unusual manifestations, and 10 for severe cases. Two patients required intensive care. 51% of those hospitalized had comorbidities. One instance of mother-to-child transmission and two deaths among confirmed cases were documented, but these deaths were not directly attributed to chikungunya.
Transmission is concentrated in the West Coast and Savanes (epidemic phase), with clusters on Cayenne Island (epidemic cluster phase) and sporadic transmission in Maroni. No cases have been reported in the Interior sectors.
