Between October 2021 and June 2022, the Bali Provincial Health Office reported 921 suspected cases of chikungunya, with an incidence of 20.6 per 100,000 population.
Sixty-eight samples were collected, confirming chikungunya virus (CHIKV) as the causative agent and characterizing two main variants of the Asian lineage. Genomic analysis of 21 complete genomes revealed high similarity (99.75–99.98%) and two variants defined by changes in nsp2 and nsp3.
Dengue cases were also detected, highlighting the clinical overlap with chikungunya. Molecular and genomic surveillance is crucial for early detection and response to outbreaks.
