Continuous circulation of the Chikungunya virus in French Guiana and Suriname

From January 1 to May 31, 2026, 621 confirmed locally acquired cases of Chikungunya were recorded in French Guiana, with a notable increase in recent weeks. The West Coast sector, with 437 cases (70%), has entered the “epidemic” phase. Authorities have activated level 3 of the ORSEC plan.

Suriname reported 2,579 cases between January and March 2026. The outbreak is expected to continue due to favorable environmental conditions, and preventive measures are recommended for travelers.
