Nicaragua registers 3,109 cases of chikungunya in 2026, the highest figure since 2015-2016. In the last six weeks, 2,122 infections were identified, 68% of the total. Honduras confirmed one imported case from Nicaragua on September 4, 2026, and Costa Rica detected patients with epidemiological links. The Ministry of Health attributes the surge to climate change and the rainy season, and is focusing on controlling the Aedes mosquito. Symptoms include fever, debilitating joint pain, and a rash, which can last up to three months in some patients.
