Chikungunya transmission was confirmed in Perico, Matanzas Province, Cuba, with the identification of the East/Central/South African genotype. Initial investigation detected the virus in serum samples and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
On July 16, 2025, an increase in cases of acute febrile illness was reported in España Republicana, Perico. Of 12 samples analyzed, 8 tested positive for CHIKV and 1 for DENV. Patients presented with high fever, severe joint pain, and a maculopapular rash. The median age was 46 years, with equal incidence in men and women.
By epidemiological week 52, transmission was confirmed in 15 provinces and 147 municipalities, with 49,258 suspected cases, 1,959 confirmed cases, and 46 deaths. CHIKV was detected in Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, indicating active viral replication and ongoing transmission. Genetic analysis places the virus in genotype II ECSA, related to strains from Brazil. This outbreak underscores the need to strengthen arbovirus surveillance.
