The chikungunya epidemic in French Guiana is intensifying, with 799 confirmed cases since January, 50 of them in the last week.
Cayenne Island is the new focus of concern, with a rise in cases for five consecutive weeks and four active outbreaks. The Maroni sector has recorded 25 cases.
The median age of confirmed cases is 32 years, and 32% are under 15 years old. There have been 141 hospitalizations, including children. One death has been reported that is not directly related to the infection.
The West Coast and Savannas are at alert level 2, and Cayenne Island is at level 1.
